Our Menstrual Cycle is a Path to Inner Guidance and Embodiment
For centuries, menstruation has been seen as a symbol of feminine power, renewal, and intuition. Yet in modern times, many people feel disconnected from their menstrual cycles, seeing them as an inconvenience rather than a source of wisdom. By learning to embrace and align with your menstrual cycle, you can cultivate a deeper connection to your body and harness its natural rhythms for emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Here are some practices to help you reconnect with your cycle and honor its power.
1. Track Your Cycle
The first step to connecting with your menstrual cycle is awareness. Use a journal, app, or calendar to track your cycle's phases, including menstruation, ovulation, and the days in between. Note physical changes, emotional shifts, and energy levels throughout the month. Over time, patterns will emerge, helping you understand your unique rhythm.

2. Learn About the Four Phases
Your menstrual cycle consists of four phases, each with distinct energies and qualities:
Menstrual Phase - Inner Winter
A time for rest, reflection, dreaming and releasing what no longer serves you.
*
Follicular Phase - Inner Spring
Energy and creativity and excitement often surge as your body prepares for ovulation.
*
Ovulatory Phase - Inner Summer
A time of heightened confidence, social energy. Going out, flirting, dressing up, playing, getting things done, presenting yourself privately or in your business - ovulation is a time when these things feel more natural to us.
*
Luteal Phase - Inner Autumn
Focus shifts inward as your body prepares for menstruation; emotions may surface. Boundaries are very clear. Allow your premenstrual phase to teach and show you.
3. Practice Cycle-Syncing
Cycle-syncing involves tailoring your diet, exercise, and work to the phases of your cycle. For example:
During the menstrual phase,
focus on restorative yoga and nutrient-dense, easily digestible foods like soups and earthy vegetable (beetroot, carrots,...).
*
In the follicular phase,
try fresh, light meals.
*
During ovulation,
enjoy social events and high-energy activities.
*
In the luteal phase,
prioritize grounding exercises and comfort foods rich in magnesium.
*
(These are just a few ideas. Go and explore and discover what works well for you!)
4. Honor Your Body's Needs
Listen to your body’s signals and honor its needs without judgment. If you’re feeling tired, allow yourself to rest. If you feel energized, channel that into creative or physical activities. Your body’s wisdom is always guiding you; the key is to pay attention.
5. Create Rituals for Each Phase
Rituals can help you connect more deeply with your cycle. For example:
During menstruation,
light a candle, journal, or take a long bath, stay warm, sleep, dream.
*
In the follicular phase,
set intentions and brainstorm new ideas.
*
Celebrate the ovulatory phase
with dance, social gatherings, or creative expression.
*
In the luteal phase,
practice gratitude and prepare for the upcoming menstrual phase by decluttering your space, clearing your calendar and to-do list.
6. Explore Menstrual Products That Feel Empowering
Using menstrual products that align with your values can deepen your connection to your cycle. Consider sustainable options like menstrual cups, reusable pads, or period underwear - or even freebleeding, which means not using any products and listening to your body to know when you bleed. These choices can also encourage mindfulness and a sense of care for both your body and the planet.
7. Work with the Moon
The menstrual cycle often aligns with the lunar phases. For instance, menstruation may coincide with the new moon, symbolizing rest and renewal, while ovulation aligns with the full moon’s vibrant energy. Or vice versa! Observe these connections and use them to deepen your practice of self-awareness.
8. Embrace Emotional Awareness
Your menstrual cycle can amplify emotions, offering an opportunity for self-reflection. Embracing your emotions without judgment can lead to greater self-understanding and healing.
9. Share Your Experience
Connecting with others about menstruation can help normalize the conversation and build community. Share your experiences with friends, family, or online communities. You may find support, wisdom, and inspiration from others on similar journeys.
